Molecules and Minds: Essays on Biology and the Social Order
by Steven Rose

Steven Rose argues for a unified, non-reductionist approach to biology in an engaging examination of the perceived tension between nature-nurture, mind-brain, biology-culture. This book takes a refreshing look at how science is pursued and its purpose and raises important questions about the theories and techniques of modern biology.

Alas Poor Darwin

Alas Poor Darwin: Escaping Evolutionary Psychology
Hilary Rose and Steven Rose (Editors)

There is a long history of scientists claiming that social institutions and human behaviour will ultimately be understandable entirely in terms of the laws of physics. Alas, Poor Darwin brings together writers from the natural and social sciences to attack these reductionist philosophies, in particular Evolutionary Psychology and its sister sociobiology. Containing contributions from a range of writers including Steven Jay Gould, Gabriel Dover, Anne Fausto-Sterling, Barbara Herrnstein Smith, Patrick Bateson, Mary Midgley and Tom Shakespeare, this book has a wealth of excellent essays covering everything from the meaning of the word instinct to weaknesses in the theory of memes. However, while important specific criticisms of Evolutionary Psychology are expounded the book fails to live up to its promise by providing a coherent critique of this contentious subject.
