Jon is a lecturer in Sociology at Newcastle
College. He has a degree in Sociology from Newcastle Polytechnic
(now Northumbria University) and he studied part-time to complete
his Masters in Social Research at the same institution.
Jon helped to organise the recent debate on Science and the Risk
Society in conjunction with the Newcastle Science Festival and
he is beginning to start a Risk section on the website. He has
previously spoken at one of our events on anti-Americanism.
As well as having a keen interest in the key sociological issues
of risk and moral panics, Jon has written about educational issues
in Britain today. He has written book reviews for publications
such as the Times Educational Supplement and the journal Youth
and Policy. He has a chapter on Further Education in the Routledge
Falmer Guide to Key Debates in Education which is published in
July 2004.
Jon is also a holder of national office in the lecturers’
union, NATFHE. He is a member of the National Executive Council
and was recently elected Chair of its Further Education Committee.
Jon’s interest, ideas and knowledge about society and social
change are drawn on by The Great Debate. He has skills as a researcher
and was part of the national team which looked at Attitudes to
Work in the 1990s (Jon was the research leader for the North-East).
He continues to be a good source of advice and guidance on a variety
of academic and research matters.
