Newcastle Science Festival 2004

The second Newcastle Science Festival coincided with National Science Week, running from 12th - 21st March 2004. As part of the proceedings The Great Debate ran a dayschool entitled The Great Debate: Of Blank Slates and Zombies taking a look at some modern theories of human nature and two public discussions: Playing it Safe (Science and the Risk Society) and Whatever Happened to the Subject?.

The Trent programme is arguably the largest mechanical engineering programme ever undertaken in Europe. The lecture will consider how the programme is, in effect, the watest step in a process of engineering evolution starting with the introduction of gas turbines in the mid-1940’s. Sir Ralph Robins, former chairman of Rolls Royce plc will deliver this lecture.
