Previous Contributors to The Great Debate
Stephanie Glendinning
Dr Stephanie Glendinning is Reader in Environmental Geotechnics
in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences
at Newcastle University. She joined the School in 1998 and is a
member of the Geotechnical Engineering and Structures Group. She has
an excellent track record in environmental geotechnics which is founded
on a long history of engagement with industry and academic work in this
field. She recognized that a step-change in understanding climate change
impacts on transport infrastructure could be made only once controlled
experimentation could be undertaken, proving cause and effect and providing
long-term datasets. She led the EPSRC BIONICS project, which provided a
unique embankment facility, and is helping to advance scientific
understanding to enable more reliable prediction of future performance
and targeted resource allocation.
Stephanie has helped advance the science of
electrokinetic geosynthetics (EKG),
and in the development of commercial innovations for large volume waste
reduction, soft soil consolidation and slope stabilisation.
She is research Director of Electrokinetics Ltd.
Stephanie is now pioneering the concept of the
Living Laboratory,
an initiative aimed at both creating local impacts from world-leading
research and developing new first-class research through tackling local
problems at life-scale. Its working philosophy is essentially to treat
the city-region as a full-scale laboratory in which to develop and
demonstrate research and its impact. This work fed into her working
closely with The Great Debate on the Sustained Engagement
project in 2011-12.
Stephanie Glendinning helped to organise and facilitate the
Sustained Engagement events
Visions for the Future of the City in October 2011,
The Future of Energy for the North East in December 2011 and
The Great Infrastructure Debate in April 2012.
